ACL Music Festival

After having to tragically cancel the 2020 version of Austin’s iconic music festival due to the Pandemic, the Austin City Limits Music Festival announced their 2021 lineup this week. While this new lineup is impressive, I still may never go to the ACL Music Festival ever again.

Before I get into that, let’s take a look at this year’s lineup:

ACL Lineup 2021

Nothin’ wrong with that. In fact, it’s quite impressive!

This first post-Pandemic show is headlined by some serious girl power including Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks, Miley Cyrus, and Erykah Badu. Second billing goes to acts like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, St. Vincent, and Phoebe Bridgers (❤️) – Girl Power Indeed! The guys aren’t slouching either though – somehow the organizers have pulled 69-year old (nice) George Strait out of semi-retirement, and he’s sharing billing with the likes of DABABY, Machine Gun Kelly, and Jack Harlow, which I find hilarious. I would absolutely love to see a group photo of those guys backstage.

As far as bands and/or “musical acts” go, there are some noteworthy groups. Austin’s own Black Pumas are a standout, and Greta Van Fleet (not to be confused with Fred VanFleet) and Modest Mouse will keep things bouncing. I’m an older dude (relative to most ACL-goers, I guess) so I’m a huge Band of Horses guy, and I also dig band-of-dads Future Islands quite a bit.  My guy Charley Crockett, John Pardi (who is good) and TANYA TUCKER(!) hold it down for the country artists, and electronica is well-repped with Rufus Du Sol, Marc Rebillet, and various down-bill acts hitting their buttons on their keyboards so people have background music to get fucked up to. I kid! But seriously, this is a fine lineup! It’s great! And, by the way, welcome back, ya know?? We’re really betting on this whole GLOBAL PANDEMIC being over with by October, which is great!

But I still probably won’t go.

I probably won’t go because no ACL Lineup could possibly be better (for me!) than the one year of ACL that I actually went to:

2013 ACL

Muse. Kings of Leon. Wilco. Vampire Weekend. Passion Pit. Arctic Monkeys. Kendrick Lamar. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Fun. Franz Ferdinand. Tame Impala. Local Natives. Grimes. Portugal. The Man. Silversun Pickups. Jimmy Eat World. Dawes. HAIM. LISSIE. Jake Bugg. Shovels & Rope.

I WENT TO THE ACL FESTIVAL THAT WEEKEND! It was amazing – Muse went so hard that they slagged the stages’ generators and the whole main stage lost power twice – METAL!

Yeah, nah. For me, personally, there’s likely no way that could ever be topped. It’s literally as if someone asked 2013 me who I’d like to see, and then somehow booked ’em all.

No offense to this year’s ACL Lineup, but (and I know this is a bit “Get Offa My Lawn” of me) the 2013 lineup is the G.O.A.T. ACL lineup and, until something comes close, I can probably skip it.

If you wanna go, I guess snag your tix here.
